Russian missile strike on Odessa: residential area hit for the first time, five dead – Reuters
At least six explosions were heard in Odessa, due to a Russian missile attack which began after 2 p.m. on Saturday April 23.
According to preliminary information, 3 rockets were intercepted by the Ukrainian defense, but 3 hit a residential area in the south of the city. Several apartments were badly damaged, windows were blown out in the rest.
One of the rockets flew into a residential complex, one – into an infrastructure. At least two cars were set on fire in a yard. There was a victim in one of them, it was reported.
“We already know of a deceased person in Odessa. He burned to death in his car in the yard of one of the houses,“, said Anton Herashchenko, adviser to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Rescuers say a shell remained unexploded in the house, but several floors were destroyed.
Initially, observers believed the attack was carried out with Kalibr missiles. Then they concluded that the city had been targeted by Kh-101 air-launched cruise missiles.
Here is the official report from the military press office:
“Today, April 23, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the air defense group of the Southern Air Command conducted hostilities to destroy enemy cruise missiles launched by the Russian strategic aircraft TU-95 from the Caspian Sea.
During the fighting, soldiers of anti-aircraft missile units destroyed two enemy cruise missiles (formerly X555 or X101), which hit the city of Odessa and 2 operational-tactical level drones, which presumably fixed the flight of cruise missiles and placed active obstacles to air defenses. Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Unfortunately, 2 missiles hit a military installation and 2 hit residential buildings.

Odessa City Council member Peter Obukhov wrote on his Facebook page:
“We received “gifts” for Easter from Putin – winged rockets fell in Odessa. Let’s hold on. The anxiety is already over. It can still happen in our city. Unable to approach enemy cities, they can sometimes use winged missiles. We must be strong. The victory will always be ours.
“Five Ukrainians killed and 18 injured. And those are just the ones we were able to find. It is likely that the death toll will be heavy,” Ukrainian presidential office chief Andriy Yermak said on Telegram, AFP reported. “A three-month-old baby was among those killed.”
